42 bits is internal to the scanner. You get 48 bits (extra bits padded) when you scan from an application that supports 48-bit files, using the TWAIN interface: Photoshop (full version) and Picture Window Pro ( http://www.dl-c.com ) are two that do. PW Pro has better support for 48-bit processing than Photoshop.
