Geoff, You are indeed correct. The spec now says,
"Optical Density Range: 3.4 in 24-bit mode, 4.2 in 42-bit mode." Canon must have added it recently; I didn't see it the last time I looked. This is good news if it's true-- it would make Dmax at least as good as the Nikon 4000 ED. But as with all specs, you need to be just slightly skeptical.
